Danielle Quigley - Portfolio

Obi Project; Final Piece - For the 1890 Swiss Riding Corset I used a red brocade cotton material. The corset is fully lined with red polyester material. Each individual panel is interfaced to make the corset sturdy. I used a gold trim around the top edge to add extra detail to the corset. This style corset was previously seen to be more delicate and would have been used for riding or most likely for boudoir use.
Obi Project; Final Piece ( Front View ) - The front of the corset is made up of 5 panels, all of which are interfaced. The corset is high over the hip and low under the bust as it would of previously been used for women becoming more active and indulging in various sports.
Obi Project; Final Piece ( Back View ) - The back of the corset is made up of 10 panels, all of which are also interfaced. It is laced up at the centre back with a gold ribbon through 8 gold metal eyelets.
Obi Project; Final Piece ( Side View ) - The bands of armour are made from a 1mm thick plastic material which I cut out on the laser cutter. The top and bottom sections are screen printed using a brocade pattern with gold dye. The middle I kept plain and added the chain and coin detail on the edge. Each section is attached together by pop rivets at either corner which helps to give it a curved shape. The bands of armour are sewn onto the corset with 2 tabs which are attached to the top section of the armour.
Obi Project; Final Design Sheet - For my final design I chose to make 1890 Swiss Riding Corset. Here are examples of the print that I used on the bands of armour, fabric swatches of my chosen materials. Drawings of how the corset will look once completed. I also made a book as part of my final design, inside it has information about the material used, screen printing and jewellery techniques.
Obi Project; Design Ideas and Textile Techniques - For my design ideas I researched past, present and future trends. I also experimented with different textile techniques to compliment my ideas and designs. Techniques; Different types of stitches on the sewing machine and overlocker. I also experimented with different designs of colour transfer print using the heat press.
Obi Project; Swiss Riding Corset Research ( Sketchbook )  As part of my research I used the following book; Corsets: Historic Patterns and Techniques by Jill Salen. In the book there is a smaller scale pattern for the swiss riding corset. Using the scale measurements on the template pattern I enlarged it to make my final piece.
Obi Project; Screen Printing Techniques ( Sketchbook ) - Using a brocade pattern screen I used 2 different coloured dyes ( white and gold ) and printed them onto 1mm thick plastic material as a trial and then cut them up to make a mosaic in my sketchbook.
Obi Project; Decorative Elements using jewellery techniques ( Sketchbook ) - In my research into different materials I experimented with copper and nickel. I used copper wire to form the chain and then used nickel to make the coin detail.I also used swatches of material which I chose, these were red brocade cotton material and for the lining I chose red polyester material.
Obi Project; Conclusion ( Sketchbook ) - I took several images throughout the making of the project. The first image on the top left page was once I had sewn all the panels together and I fitted it to a mannequin to ensure that it was the correct size. The image on the bottom left page was once the corset had been sewn together, lined and eyelets and gold trim added. On the right page this was once the corset was completed. I took photos of the corset at different angles and concluded the final outcome of the project.
Creative Self Portrait; Using Mixed Media ( Queen of Arts Playing Card ) - I used A4 size handmade paper. Black and white photograph for the images. For the crown I pressed flower petals and added red and gold sequins. Around the edge of the image I used a zig-zag stitch with red cotton thread. I also used typography and magazine cut outs for the letters and the red lips.
Visual Studies; Collage - Alexander McQueen Campaign ( Spring/Summer 2013 ) I used an image from the S/S 13 campaign " Like bees to a honey pot " then cut out shapes from different magazines to give a honeycomb effect to the collage.

Exploratory Stage; Media Experimentation using ink and bleach with wax crayon. Drawing straight onto the paper with wax crayon then adding bleach and ink after the wax created a barrier on the images.
Exploratory Stage; Textile Techniques - ( Z for Zebra ) Screen Printing onto cotton material using stencil's and different coloured water based dyes. Each image was printed on separately and had to dry before adding the next stencil.

Exploratory Stage; Media Experimentation - Using ink and bleach with a bamboo pen and fountain pen to create different images.
